Directions for AI Ethics Education in Catholic Schools: Based on the Teachings of the Catholic Church

Abstract
[Objective] This study examines the problems caused by artificial intelligence (AI) and the Catholic Church’s teachings on these issues, and proposes directions for AI ethics education in Catholic schools. [Contents] AI offers both great possibilities and serious risks to humanity. The Catholic Church teaches that AI should promote human dignity and the common good and remain under human control. Based on these teachings, AI ethics education in Catholic schools should strengthen Christian Human Studies, encourage reflection on the ultimate purpose of science and technology, and foster AI literacy. Through this process, students are expected to develop competencies in knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to AI.[Conclusions] First, AI should be developed and used under human control for the promotion of human dignity and the common good. Second, AI ethics education in Catholic schools should encourage reflection on human existence and the purpose of science and technology while strengthening AI literacy. Third, such education should focus on developing students’ competencies in knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
