Current Status and Role of Character Education in Religiously-Affiliated Universities

ABSTRACT

[Objective] This study analyzes character education in religiously-affiliated universities ten years after the Character Education Promotion Act, exploring harmonization of religious values with universal educational goals. It identifies structural dilemmas amid diversified student bodies and secularization, seeking solutions to conceptual ambiguity and educational formalization.[Contents] First, the study examined character education concepts and pedagogical perspectives, identifying philosophical implications. Second, it analyzed operational status by religious tradition and major programs. Third, through critical examination of achievements and limitations, it proposed a theoretical model harmonizing religious particularity with universality. Fourth, it explored social responsibilities in pluralistic society and sustainable development linkage.[Conclusions] Religiously-affiliated universities possess clear philosophies based on religious values, yet face limitations serving diverse students. This stems from challenges distinguishing religious from character education and harmonizing religious freedom, neutrality, and founding ideologies. However, their value-based strengths can complement general universities' limitations. A model balancing religious particularity and educational universality will benefit university education and schools.
