A Study on the Reconceptualization of Religious Education according to the Application of the Revised 2022 Curriculum: In the Context of Religious Education in Catholic Schools

ABSTRACT

[Objective] The purpose of this study is to examine the debate on religious education between the Ministry of Education and private schools and to renew the concept of Catholic religious education.[Contents] To accomplish this, we will first examine the concept of religious education and then identify the specifics of the controversy between the Ministry of Education and independent schools regarding religious education in Korea's multi-religious context. Based on this, we will reconceptualize the meaning and nature of religious education in Catholic schools in the Korean context.[Conclusions] As a result, it is hoped that it will bring a new perspective and vision to the debate between independent schools and the Department for Education by recognizing the universality of religious education as a liberal arts subject in the National Curriculum, while at the same time affirming that the particularities of religious education in Catholic schools are not mutually exclusive but can coexist.
