Exploring the Cosmopolitanism of Manhae Han Yong-un

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to find the interface between Cosmopolitanism and Buddhism. It also aims to contribute to the diversity of research on global citizenship in the field of related religious studies. In this study, the modern religious landscape and the Cosmopolitanism of Manhae Han Yong-un are explored.CONTENTS The following research is dealt with in order to look into Cosmopolitanism and the ideal of Manhae, which are the major themes of this study. First, various viewpoints on citizens were checked for a clear definition of Cosmopolitan, which is one of the main agendas of this study. Through this, it was confirmed that the main value of a Cosmopolitanism that surpassed the progressiveness of the concept of citizenship is peace. Second, I examined the reality faced by the various religions and the perception of reality that Joseon Buddhism itself had. Finally, the interface was analyzed between Manhae as a modern Buddhist practitioner and Cosmopolitanism. RESULTS The conclusion of this study is as follows. If we can view Cosmopolitanism as a process of human progress, we find global citizenship in Korean modern tradition. In particular, Manhae's ideals and practices based on universal pacifism have aspects that are consistent with the goal of Cosmopolitanism.
