Augustine s Thoughtson Education and Faith-Education

ABSTRACT

The school-education of Korea met a total crisis as the disruption proceeded due to knowledgecentric practice against the whole-personality education goal. Hence faith-education in great need for moral, ethical and spiritual development. In the rapidly changing period of civilization like the present time Augustine created education method and system for religion. We considered finding a new direction and guideline on the whole-personality education from Augustine's example.We review Augustine's thoughts on Christian faith-education with his 「Christian Education(De Doctrina Christiana)」 and discuss its significance in the present educational situation. The aim of Christian faith-education, his views on God, man and salvation, epistemology, and the relation between teacher and learner are considered. We study his characteristic thoughts on the Christian faith-education based upon the relation between faith and reason, and the problem of words and realities. Especially we consider the role of teachers, and teaching methods according to his illumination theory of learning. We emphasiz the application of Augustine's thoughts and faitheducation that encourged the ethical value and higher goals of life in contemporary educational situation where the knowledge-learning is dominant.
