A Study on the Combination of Zen-Buddhism and illustrated Poems

ABSTRACT

Zen in Dang Dynasty was absorbed in general life, on the other hand, that in Song period couldn t be viewed apart from poetry. It means that language was regarded at least as a bridge for mental activity to obtain principle, even though it could not get over inner-spiritual experience. It was poetry that was reckoned as the bridge. Nevertheless the limit of poetry made paintings, Zen idea and itself united naturally. So to speak, the literati painting theory settled in Song Dynasty was the issue of ‘unification of poetry and painting’ or ‘poetic feeling and painting meaning’.The Gentry used observation and intuition of Zen-Buddhism to get an idea of creation on the matter of showing up poetic feeling and painting meaning. Besides their expressions were performed by instinctive agility such as the moment of sudden enlightenment. As the effect of these work, the painting became a simple and pregnant new nature. Moreover it implied their wishes to reach the awakened situation of Zen which could not be represented by language only.
