Film and Religious Education

ABSTRACT

This thesis aims to find the possibility of film as a source of religious education. I ask the following: (1) Is film useful media for religious education? (2) What s the method to use film for religious education? (3) What s the profit by applying film to religious education? For these question, I tried two researches. First, I analyzed the ‘discourse on media-film’ of religions(especially of the protestant church). Second, I tried to find the possibility of film for religious education by using my experience of lectures and researches.Religion and film have something in common in that they manifest imagination and revive reality through ‘image-making’. This common point makes it possible for us to discuss about ‘religion and film’ or ‘film and religious education’. Film also has a function of communication, and religion and film encounter at this point.Our age is generally called ‘times of image’ or ‘times of visual culture’. At this moment, religions are pressured to change directions in the field of traditional religious education. These days, the necessity of ‘stereo religious education’ is on the increase. Stereo religious education heads for the junction of ‘language of Gutenberg(literal text)’ and ‘symbolic language(visual text)’
