ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine Logotherapy of Viktor Frankl in the view of Buddhist counseling which aims at Self-Transcendence. This paper looks for further clues on the origins of the Logotherapy, by exploring about the life of Frankl, which is based on historical, philosophical, and psychological background for the better understanding of the concept of transcendence. Self-Transcendence in Logotherapy is escaping from existential limits as loss of meaning and going to ultimate meaning of life. Frankl argues that the meaning of life varies from person to person, every hour of the day. So the man must ask the meaning of every moment of his own life by himself. Logotherapy is based on the philosophy of existentialism which is concerned in transcending the existential vacuum. It has contributed to the fundamental ideas of Logotherapy such as Freedom of Will, Will to Meaning, and the Meaning of Life. It is represented by the counseling techniques as the Dereflection and the Paradoxical Intention which show the similarity of Buddhist human-view. Self-transcendence can contribute to the Buddhist counseling in the dimension of human understanding as the self-negation and the selfless mind from the view of existential awakening.
