A Study on the Qualification of Religious Teacher in Korean Public Education

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to clarify the qualification of religious teacher so that he or she may appropriately put the religious education into practice in public education. In details, this article deals with three issues as followings. First of all, prior to developing qualification of religious teacher, several preconditions that religious education in Korean public education seriously needed to be considered have been investigated. For example, it is about relationship public school and private school for religious education even though all schools including private school in Korea have to keep in mind to follow the 7th National Religious Curriculum, which is based on the “education about religion” rather than “education of religion.” Second, the article suggests three fundamental guidelines of developing the professional qualification of religious teacher like this: 1) educational qualification of religious teacher; 2) qualification of the religious studies of religious teacher; 3) qualification of spirituality or religiosity of religious teacher. Finally, according to the recommendation of Ministry of Education of Korea as for basic qualification of secondary school teacher, the article tried not only to develop the 20 propositions as the general standard of religious teacher, but also to give concrete forms each general standard of religious teacher into three specific standard of religious teacher.
