Beyond Christian Fundamentalism－Critics on American as well as Korean Christian Fundamentalism and an Alternative Idea of Education to the Fundamentalism－

ABSTRACT

Although there has been various discourses about fundamentalism, we seldom find clear definition on fundamentalism so far. This thesis defines what fundamentalism and analyzes how it produces diverse effects in society and culture. This thesis argues that when the development of science and relative values have dominated modern culture, people turns to security, which instigates the birth of fundamentalism. When this conservative value becomes political movement, we finally calls it ‘fundamentalism.’ This thesis analizes American and Korean Christian fundamentalism. This thesis finds the origin of American Christian fundamentalism from the combination of shaking modern identity and popular Calvinistic idea. In addtion, this thesis also illustrates the development of fundamentalism in George W. Bush government of the U.S. In addition, this thesis describes how the fundamentalism in America has been transferred to Korea. Korean fundamentalists bench-marks those of America, and actively participate in matters of politics. In conclusion, this thesis suggests pluralistic education to get beyond the culture of fundamentalism.
