Direction in Education for Apprentices of Jingak Buddhist Order

ABSTRACT

Jingak Buddhist order differentiates itself from existing traditional and modern Buddhist orders in the aspect of organization and system operation by proposing a new Buddhism consistent with modern society. And, it has operated the specialized monk education system of traditional Buddhist orders separate from that for would-be monks or at the temple. However, it is time that the direction of monk education for new environment be considered based on the changes of times and Buddhist orders. Above all, for this, an ideal image of culturalist suitable for the foundation spirit of Jingak Buddhist order should continuously be established, which makes the direction in education for apprentices to supplement the members of Jingak Buddhist order with the roles of new culturalist judged. Also, it is time that a specific ideological direction of education for apprentices be sought with the consideration of such culturalist image. The system preparation and education process establishment for practical education plan was attempted in this process. System changes being applied in education for apprentices of Jingak Buddhist order and several suggestions of the direction for the future to fulfill the significance of education of apprentices are as follows; First of all, a definite image of Jingak Buddhist order culturalist is needed to set up since such culturalist is distinct from the one of existing traditional Jogye Buddhist order. The status to fit the fundamental announcement of secularism position should be organized. Second, Jingak Buddhist order could maintain the meaning of existence by persistent development of specialized Buddhism propagation way useful without exception at this point of time. Accordingly, the systematic and effective plan of modern apprentices education should be devised.
