Toward an Understanding of School Education and Alternative Education in Unificationism

ABSTRACT

The first purpose of this article is to describe the problem of school education and the root of the problem. The second purpose is to explore Unificationist insights to alternative education. The main problems of school education are educational passions for success, rank-oriented educational system, school record-centered competition towards entrance examination, the expansion of preparatory school, etc. The problems have originated from modern education. The characteristics of modern education are rational human view, scientific world view, pragmatistic value system, public education system. Today, it can be said that schools are a hotbeds of student violence and juvenile suicide, and schooling infringes on the right of the student. Schools have to be reformed in the direction where teachers and students can make harmony and students can promote their lives. Alternative education appeared in order to overcome the problem of school education. The essential point of Unificationist theory of education consist of three great ideals of education, three forms of education, and images of ideally-educated person. Unificationism suggests to alternative education as follows: the right understanding of education, the renewal of home education, the education of pure love and values, the valanced education of general education and vocational education, reformation of the relationship of education and religion. First of all, on the basis of right understanding on education, we have to overcome the rank-oriented educational system, school record-centered competition for entrance examination. Without it, we can not succeed in over coming the other problems.
