ABSTRACT

This study examined the purpose and direction of the alternative education of Buddhist religious schools. Buddhist alternative education values the fostering of a man of character built upon the Buddha’s teaching. The personality education was looked into with a focus placed on the three supreme disciplines of the Buddha: Sila, Samadhi and Panna. First, this study discussed the personality education of Sila(precepts). Teenagers need to conform to Five Precepts as it benefits not only themselves but others as well. It also helps to build up control of mind. Second, the personality education of Samadhi(concentration) was explored. Samadhi allows one’s mind to gain calm through meditation. Samadhi helps one’s mind at peace and stability. Last, this study exmained the personality education of Panna(wisdom). As Panna can only be obtained from one’s own experience, Temple Stay is a proper program for teenagers. Panna is an insight which allows one to see things as they are, realize the truth, and to learn the way of living together with others.
