On the Unificationist Understanding of Sexuality and Love

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to investigate the Unificationist understanding of sexuality and love. According to Unificationism, human beings created in God’s image should have realized true love but were corrupted by doing false love. Therefore, they have to be restored as original human beings through practicing true love. True love is based on pure love. Values are confused as individual freedom is allowed and diverse cultures are mixed together in modern society. Sexuality is a representative part of moral confusion. Modern husband and wife want to make an intimate relationship with each other. However, a couple-dominated family structure alienates family members and relatives resulting in a barrier to forming intimacy. For that reason, modern people tend to have more obsessions about sexuality and love. Modern people try to form intimacy and identity, and find the meanings of their lives through making various types of sexuality. Unificationism understands sexuality and love in light of with God’s purpose of creation. And Unificationism insists that there must be pure love at the center of human beings’ responsibility to realize the Three Great Blessings given by God. It also considers sex education as values education about true love.
