Approach of the Unification Church to Healing

ABSTRACT

This paper is an attempt to understand the doctrine of the Unification Church regarding healing and its methodology. Starting from a general definition of healing, this paper first looks at the Unification Church’s understanding of health, disease, and healing from the perspective of the Creation, Fall, Restoration, and give and receive action. Then the paper explains healing through the doctrine of the Unification Church through the perspective of give and receive action and attempts at a methodological understanding through a theory of counselling. The Unification Church places importances on family life and recommends the blessing marriage. This research focuses on education and counselling for marriage healing in the process of creating a healthy family. From the perspective of healing, if education is a way to prevent problems, counselling is an effort to resolve the problems. The Unification Church sees the relationship between husband and wife as a relationship that is made centering on God’s Will and as an encountering that has the value on a universal level. The relationship between a husband and wife signifies a relationship of ‘we’ which goes beyond a simple relationship between ‘you and I.’ Based on John Gottman’s theory, this research points to love map, emotional bank, and communication method to improve the relationship between husband and wife as a way to heal marriages. He seeks to solve marriage problems by improving methods of communication between husband and wife. This research also introduces cases that applied the method of counselling relationship between husband and wife and the effects of healing.
