Teachers Perception and Practice About a Religious Education In Catholic High School

ABSTRACT

Missions and aims of school education are realized by curriculum. Specially, the religious education in Catholic high school is characterized the identity realization. However, a feature of religious studies, in the 2015 curriculum, is the study of religion and is aimed to understand various religious cultures in multi-religious society. The aims of this study are investigating about how a religion education is dealt with dual roles which are religious education and religion education in Catholic high school and also how religion teachers have difficulty in the curriculum. Every school has only one religious teacher, which the result of study can be used to support religious teachers. The issues are : First, how do religious teacher in Catholic high school understand and practice in the religious education? Second, what are the teachers special considerations on the religious education practice in Catholic high school? Third, what do teachers have conflict in religious education practice? This study includes the analysis of various research and interview with teachers in Catholic high school. The results are : First, the religious education is to aid growth of the religiosity, to practise Catholic tradition and advantage, to improve a critical thinking about religion and discern true religion, to understand religion in general, character education, to teach religious activities in non-subject areas and teaching with teachers life it self. Second, the religious education practice in Catholic high school is to respect cultural variety and neighbor religion. Third, the teachers conflict is a lack of understanding about the religion education at school, a gap between religion education practice and Catholic education, a lack of support and interest by church, a lack of religion education necessity and insufficient textbook. Most teachers have tried to solve these problems and challenge by themselves, also respond necessity of learning community activities.
