ABSTRACT

This paper classifies and examines educational meaning of Buddhist Jiangjing(講經) with different perspectives from activity records. Jiangjing could be classified by its object, subject, place, method, form, time and the host. Therefore the concept of Jiangjing could be changed due to its classification. This paper divide Jiangjing into three different classes - Personal Jiangjing hosted by Venerable monk (Chapter Ⅱ), National Jiangjing (Chapter Ⅲ), and Jiangjing located in Temple (Chapter IV). ‘Jiangjing by Venerable monk’ considered Wonkwang(圓光), Jajang(慈藏), Wonhyo(元曉), Eosang(義湘), Jinpyo(眞表), and Seungjeon(勝詮)’s Jiangjing activities. Hosting Venerable monk were mostly from Hwaeomjong(華嚴宗) and majority of them studied at Tang Dynasty. Also, national Jiangjing was hosted for wellness for the king and national peace. In the educational point of view, this could be educational session for the king. ‘Jiangjing in temple’ mostly emphasizes Juksanbubhwawon Temple(赤山法花院) cases. It has significant meaning of civil education that led by Temple, participated with local civilians. Since Jiangjing ceremony is symbolized text of Buddhist scriptures, participants could learn the scripture with their hole body not the head.
